The National Patriotic Movement (NPM) has welcomed the dissolution of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity and announced its presidential candidate for the December 2026 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in a press conference held in Juba, the NPM Chairperson Issa Muzamil Sebit said the party positively welcomes the end of the transitional period and the dissolution of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity R-TGoNU and appointment of caretaker administration that took place on 22nd September 2026.

“National Patriotic Movement welcomes positively the end of the Transitional Period and the dissolution of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity,” said Muzamil.

However, Muzamil urged President Salva Kiir Mayardit to supervise the caretaker officials and direct them to be neutral and fair, saying caretaker Governors and officials should be neutral and not loyal to one political party, ensure equal political space, and should not use public resources for political campaigns.

“Most of the officials appointed are from SPLM and no consultation was done with registered political partis. Nevertheless, NPM urges President Salva Kiir to supervise the caretaker officials,” said the NPM Chairman.

Regarding the Inter-Party Dialogue set to begin on 24th September, the Party’s Chairman said the NPM has applied to participate in the inter-party dialogue, but noted that key issues such as election date, campaign period and constituencies were not discussed and the Election Act 2012 Amendment Bill, 2026 was passed without considering opinions of non-signatory parties like NPM.

“The NPM would like to bring to the attention of President Kiir and the Committee tasked with the inter-party dialogue to prioritize registered political parties because only fully registered political parties are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections,” said Muzamil.

The Party further outlined its expectation on the inter-party dialogue to address issues of funding to the political parties contesting in the December elections, provision of security for candidates participating, code of conduct to govern political parties during the elections and equal political space for all parties.

“Genuine elections cannot be achieved when the ruling party enjoys unrestricted mobilization while opposition political parties are constrained unlawfully from engaging in lawful political activities across the country,” said the Chairperson.

Meanwhile, Gatkouth Biel Diet, the Secretary of the NPM announced that its Governing Council has endorsed its Chairman, Dr. Issa Muzamil Sebit Makelele, as its presidential candidate for the upcoming elections. The party said it will announce candidates for Governors, National and State Members of Parliament, and Local Government in the coming weeks.

“The NPM would like to announce to the general public that, its governing council has endorsed its chairman, Dr. Issa Muzamil Sebit Makelele, as its Presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 elections,” said Diet.

Following the announcement of its Presidential Candidate, the party called on all its members, the general public and members of the international community to support the upcoming 2026 general election process.
