The Jonglei State government has canceled the establishment of 44 newly created public secondary schools, citing a lack of basic educational and financial requirements.
Speaking to Favour FM this afternoon, Jonglei State Minister of General Education and Instruction, Samuel Ador Thon, said the schools did not meet the required standards.
“The schools lacked basic facilities, including classrooms, administrative offices and libraries,” Thon said.
He said the schools also lacked qualified teachers and financial support.
“There was no budget allocated for their operation and sustainability,” he said.
Thon said the schools were created in May 2025 without approval from the Jonglei State Council of Ministers or the national Ministry of General Education and Instruction.
“For a school to be legal, there must be classrooms, a budget allocated, a library and a laboratory,” he said.
The minister said establishing secondary schools requires prior approval from the relevant authorities.
He said the state government will instead focus on improving existing schools.
Thon added that future schools will only be established after adequate funding, infrastructure and qualified teachers are secured.
He said the decision is aimed at ensuring that secondary education in Jonglei meets required standards and that public resources are used effectively.
